I don’t care if you don’t care.

I don’t care if you don’t care.
you’re speaking an awful lot,
for someone indifferent.

I don’t care if you don’t care,
so I found another lover,
who’ll leave me too.

countless hours spent,
on starting over,
so I don’t care,
if you don’t care.

you claim, “I don’t want to feel this way anymore”?
then you go and betray your skin.

you claim, “there’s better things than this”?
then you go and betray your kin.

I don’t care if you don’t care,
so I found another lover,
who’ll leave me too.

they wanted a song,
I wrote them one.

it made their eyes,
flutter this way and that,
it made their ears,
hear this way and that,

…it is done.

they go home,
and love those who love them.

so I’ll write another song.
for no one but me.

and love no one at all, and wake up all alone.

there were no words left,
to find in our lungs.

we used them all,
to explain ourselves.

well I don’t know you.
don’t care to know you.
don’t want to know you.
moved on to drinking.

let’s make a fire,
keep ourselves warm.

let’s make a fire,
and ward away the night.

no one will know we were ever scared,
no one will know we were ever alive,
we feel no fear, we’re more than man.

let’s make a fire,
and build it off our hopes.

our hopes will be the kindling,
and we’ll start it right up.

I’m not afraid, I’m not a man.
nothing bothers me, nothing scares me.
we’ll never forget again,
that we’re more than our parts.

together she and I,
we built machinery from nothing,
and the gears oh the gears,
how they churned and they turned.

we’ll build cities in a day,
we’ll make factories and roads,
we’ll rebuild civilization,
you and I, oh you and I.

but how they groaned under pressure,
how they turned on us then,
how the wiring it frayed,
they will never think the same again.

we had the keys to the world,
in the marrow of our bones,
but they snapped under pressure,
and bleed through our mouths.
we had the keys to the world,
in the blood in our veins,
but they withered up,
and bleed through our pores.

oh how they groaned under pressure,
how they turned on us then,
the screamed for our blood,
but settled for our pride.

we’ll never build again,
we’ll never rule again,
we’re meant for nothing,
nothing but dead.

we are the dead now,
always and forever.

if holding on means letting you go,
then I give up.

if holding on means letting you go,
then I don’t want to hold on anymore.

we sleep in these separate beds,
thinking the same damn thoughts,
and we both know what comes next,
we’ve known since the beginning.

I give up, I’m letting go.
I give up, I’m letting me go.
